Home for the Holidays by Sara Richardson

5 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Home for the Holidays is a beautiful and heartwarming story about three sisters going back to the place they loved most as a child, their aunt Sassy’s inn in Colorado. The three sisters live in different states and are going through a bunch of different issues. One is dealing with an incompetent ex-husband. One is getting married with an overbearing soon to be mother in law, and one is dealing with infertility. All three sisters are overwhelmed so when their aunt Sassy asks them to come visit for her last Christmas at the end, they all go. And it was exactly what they all needed.

This story was so enchanting. I loved every character. I love the setting. I love the relationship bonding. I honestly love everything about this story. It is the type of story that makes you feel good.. even when dealing with some harder issues. The writing was perfect.

I can’t wait to read more from this author.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I loved the setting of the story. I absolutely loved the world and the characters were all fantastic. I just don’t know if I liked the actual story.

This book starts with Languoreth and her twin brother Lailoken growing up learning the old way. However there is a new religion and with that comes zealots and war. Languoreth knows her duty. She knows she must marry to protect her people… But there is this dragon warrior that she falls in love with first. I won’t give anything away but I will say that she knows her duty to her people.

This story is full of a brutal world and a brother and sister trying to stay alive and keep their family alive. It’s full of love and heartbreak. I am glad that the next book comes out soon! I don’t want to wait to see what happens.

Fable by Adrienne Young

5 out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I loved this book so much. I literally read this book in a day! I have two young kids.. so that’s not easy! But I could not put it down!

This book is all about Fable. It starts with her being 14 and abandoned by her father on a criminal island with nothing more than slash on her arm. She spends the next couple of years learning to survive on her own. Working her way to buy passage off the island so she can go find her father. She does eventually bribe her way onto the Marigold. Where she is not welcomed by the crew. I loved watching Fable slowly earn the respect of the crew. I loved that she was confident but knew that respect isn’t just given.

When Fable finally sees her father again it isn’t at all what she expected. Her inheritance is a ship! Just not the one she thought she was going to get. She now has something to help the Marigold and their crew. She joins back up with them and that’s where things get really interesting. The crew is now starting to like her and West ( the headmaster) is starting to show his real feelings.

The books ends on a cliffhanger and it makes you want the next book for sure! I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Fable comes out September 1st and it’s not one you’re going to want to miss!

Thank you Netgalley for the early copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Paradise Cove by Jenny Holiday

4 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I am so glad we got Jake’s book! I needed his story. I knew this one wasn’t going to be as light of a read as Mermaid inn because of Jake’s past. But there was still humor and lots of heat in this book.

Jake is a grumpy handyman. I mean not an actual handyman but he fixes everything! He has a close group of friends but doesn’t talk much. I loved him. He may not have been talkative but he was an incredibly sweet man. Nora is a city girl who wanted to switch up her life. She met Jake while he was getting his hair braided.. Honestly one of the cutest “meet cutes” I’ve ever read.

This book handles a pretty tough subject extremely well. The feelings were sincere. I personally haven’t gone through what Jake did but I could feel his emotions. Jenny Holiday did a phenomenal job making the characters real. She was able to mix raw emotions with enough humor to make this book the perfect balance.

I 100% recommend this book and this series. And honestly anything this author writes.

Thank you so much Forever Publishing for the early copy!

This is one of those books that 100% lived up to the hype. I loved this book so much.

We have Gus Everett who is a popular literary fiction author. And we have January Andrews who is a best selling romance author. They were college rivals and now they are neighbors for the summer! They decide to write a book in the other’s genre and try to fight the attraction they are both feeling.

This book was the perfect mix of funny, sweet and to not take everything at face value. I loved watching both characters realize that the other’s genre isn’t a piece of cake! I also loved watching these two characters fall in love.

If you haven’t picked this book up, I highly recommend it! It was a quick read. I stayed up way too late reading but it was all worth it!

The Black Witch by Laurie Forest

3.5 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

I wanted to like this book more than I did.. Well that isn’t 100% accurate because I did like the book. I did not like Elloren. She got better towards the end but it was honestly hard to get to that point. Elloren has grown up with her uncle, completely sheltered. Her aunt decides that it’s time for Elloren to attend Verpax University. When she gets there she is immediately thrown into “turf war” over a boy. The problem here is that it’s completely ridiculous. The “other” girl is a psycho. It was honestly annoying because there was literally no reason for any of that drama. But that isn’t why I didn’t like Elloren. I didn’t like her because she was so unbelievably naive. She knew absolutely nothing about the outside world. I know she as sheltered but come on! Her brothers went to the school. She had to know something! She looked down on everyone.. she though she was better than everyone! But then got upset whenever someone hated her. She also whined and cried a lot. And she tattled whenever anyone looked at her funny. It was obnoxious. Honestly I had to force myself to finish the book. Luckily she eventually started fighting her own battles but it was a very long, very annoying road.

Okay so now onto the things I actually enjoyed. I loved the politics in this book. It was all so intricate and absolutely fascinating. It was hard to know who was bad and who was a rebel. I loved learning which side everyone was on. I liked the rebellion. I think the next book is going to be a million times more interesting and enjoyable because Elleron has finally picked a side.

Do I recommend this book? Yes but be prepared to hate the main character. Honestly there aren’t any redeeming qualities about her until the end. She’s awful.

Bones and Drones by K.A. Goodsell

5 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I loved this book. Paislee is a 17 year old girl who lives in a small town, Pine Grove. She has been surrounded by death her whole life; her mother is the town funeral director, her father is the medical examine and she wants to study forensic anthropology. So yeah she is very comfortable with death.. That is until one of her classmates is found dead. She teams up with Gage who has never really spoken to her. They form a really adorable friendship as they work on the case together. I am very intrigued by both of these characters. Paislee is unapologetic in her love for the macabre. She is a very smart and ambitious girl and I can’t wait to see what happens next for her. Gage is actually a lot like Paislee in his ambition. He wants to create drones that will change investigations. I loved that both of these young characters know what they want and go for it!

If you enjoy a good mystery and characters that you will instantly fall in love with, then I highly, highly recommend this book.

I listened to the audiobook and Carrie Coello was a phenomenal narrator. I think she captured Paislee’s inner voice perfectly.

The author kindly gave me the audiobook. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Just Saying by Sophie Ranald

This book was just okay for me. Alice is living with her boyfriend of two years, Joe. She has a career set back and can no longer pay for her half of the rent. Joe suggest that Zoe, HIS EX GIRLFRIEND, move in with them. I am floored that Alice was okay with this. My answer would be a very big F no and I would consider leaving the jerk for even suggesting it… But that’s me.

So Zoe now lives with them and Alice is second guessing everything(shocker). She thinks Zoe is trying to get Joe back. There are alot of up and downs and I got just a little bit bored. We also do not get a whole love of Joe and Alice.. which was weird to me. This book also takes a dark turn with sexual assault and I was not prepared for that at all. So trigger warning there.

Over all I think this book was entertaining.. was it my favorite? No. But it was okay. If this is your first Ranald book and you didn’t like it, I highly suggest picking up any of her other books. They flow alot better than this one.

Patience Jordan has been falsely imprisoned. She has lost everything, her son, her money and any life she ever wanted for herself. Busick Strathmore, Duke of Repington has moved into her house and is the guardian to her son. Patience takes a job as nanny to her own son. –Isn’t this the best premise? I was so excited to receive an early copy of this book. I loved it. I loved the relationship and how it developed. I love Patience. I think she was an extremely strong woman.. especially with the rough hand she was given.

The only downside of this book was the beginning was a little bit confusing. But everything gets explained and I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Crushing it By Lorelei Parker

I loved this book! Sierra was so relatable to me. I am a huge gamer and as soon as I saw this book, I knew I had to have it! Sierra is a video game developer. She has to present her game at a conference and she has to overcome her fear of public speaking.

She enters a poetry slam contest to try to overcome her fear. My second hand embarrassment made me cringe so much. But this is where she meets a few main characters. A few I love and one I absolutely despise.

This book was a quick, very cute read. I loved the people and environment. Gaming nerds are my people. So I loved it! I also loved that the characters were not perfect. The only downside I had was Sierra staying with someone who was horrible to her. But she grows a lot throughout the book. So it all worked out in the end!

-Also you do not need to play video games to enjoy this book. Sierra is still a very relatable character!

The Lady Rogue by Jenn Bennett

4 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I own alot of Jenn Bennett books but for whatever reason have never read them. I will be fixing that mistake soon! Because this book was phenomenal. The writing was so good. But what really stood out to me were the characters!

Theo and Huck were both so much fun to read about. I loved following them on their rescue mission. Where they learn about witches and curses and ghosts. And we find out who Theo’s ancestors are. Here’s the thing that I loved most; Huck was scared. He wasn’t running into danger. He kind of let Theo take the lead and he provided support and a great sense of humor. But I freaking adored that about the characters. They felt so real. I loved them.

The only downside to this book was the ending.. I hated it. I was hoping for so much more. It was eft completely open. I have heard that the author would like to write a second book but that she doesn’t know if it’ll happen. So yeah.. I took off a whole star for the bad ending. I hate feeling unsatisfied after reading a book.. especially a book that I loved

It’s no secret that I am a fan of the Immortal Guardians series. I love everything about it. I love the brooding immortal characters and the sassy women. I love the world with the vampires as the enemies. I love the friendships and the bonds the guardians have.

I was nervous going into this book because it is the first one that isn’t set in North Carolina and the group of immortal guardians there. But this book was fantastic. Nick is an immortal guardian in Texas. He has loved his neighbor for years but has never done anything about it because she has a child and he is an immortal who hunts vampires. Kayla has been crushing on her neighbor almost as long has he has loved her. Certain circumstances happen and they are thrown together and they finally admit to their feelings. A different kind of enemy pops up and forces some tough decisions.

This book defiantly had a slower pace than the last couple of books but it was a much needed breather. Nick and Kayla are cute together. And I loved how Nick let Kayla be herself and vise versa.

If you have read the previous books, you don’t need me to tell you to read this. Seth and a few of the NC guardians show up and it was nice to see them as backup characters. I love them but I love that we are getting some fresh guardians!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Broken Dawn
Book #10 Immortal Guardians
By Dianne Duvall

June 16, 2020

Delve into an exciting new stand-alone novel in New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall’s “fast-paced and humorous” (Publishers Weekly), “utterly addictive” (RT Book Reviews) Immortal Guardians series.

Nick Belanger can’t stop thinking about the single mother who lives next door. She’s smart. She’s funny. She’s so beautiful he can’t stare at her too long for fear his eyes will start to glow. But Kayla thinks he’s just an ordinary guy who works in security. Finding out he instead is a powerful immortal warrior who hunts and slays psychotic vampires for a living may not go over well, particularly since she has a daughter she doesn’t want to endanger.

Kayla Dorman can keep neither her gaze nor her thoughts from straying to the man next door. Who can blame her really? He is the epitome of tall, dark, and handsome with smart, charming, and honorable thrown in. He’s also a few years younger than her and surely would not be interested in a single mom who hasn’t dated since her divorce. At least that’s what she thinks until an accident nearly takes her life and Nick risks all to save her.

The dynamics of their relationship swiftly change. The friendship they’ve developed over the years deepens into love as the two spend every minute they can together, laughing and teasing, never suspecting a threat may lurk in the shadows. But that threat soon strikes, making it clear that Nick is the target and his enemy doesn’t care if Kayla gets caught in the cross fire. Though Kayla bravely rises to the occasion and is determined to do whatever it takes to help Nick defeat his enemy, Nick is terrified of losing her. Can he identify and eliminate his new nemesis before the man takes everything from him?

Up Close and Personal by Kathryn Freeman

3 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This is the first time I’ve read anything by this author and honestly this wasn’t my favorite. I mean it wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t amazing either.

I like the plot. Zac is a famous British actor who has a crazy stalker. So he decides to hire a body guard.. a female body guard, Kat. You know what’s going to happen. They are going to fall madly in love. Again I love this. I love the he hired a female body guard. Yay for feminism. But my issue with this book is that the love wasn’t believable. They acted like children whenever they were together. There was way, way too much drama. Alot of their problems could have been solved if they just would have spoken to each other without throwing a fit.

So over all the story was okay. I like the plot idea and I liked the characters as individuals… but I didn’t like the romance. I didn’t like that there was added drama just for the sake of added drama to the story.

The Sword and the Dagger by Robert Cochran

4 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I enjoyed this book so much! This book is about a Christian prince(Conrad), the princess he was suppose to marry(Elaine) and the Muslim assassin(Rashid) sent to kill her. These three end up traveling to find out why Rashid was suppose to kill her. Of course nothing is ever that easy. They are sent on a separate quest to retrieve a letter.

I am obsessed with the characters and the friendship they formed. They all disliked each other at first. But they slowly grew to depend on each other. To trust that they would fight to save one another.

The history aspect of the story was very entertaining. The author, I think.. although I am no history buff, did a great job. Of course some things were changed but I think he did a great job at keeping the heart of the history true.

If you enjoy history and strong friendships then I highly recommend this book.

The Court of Miracles by Kester Grant

3.5 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

3.5 stars. I wish GR would get half stars!

I was just a little disappointed by this book. It’s advertised as Les Miserables meets Six of Crows. Listen, if you put Six of Crows in your description, I will read your book. I don’t care what it’s about Six of Crows is one of my all time favorite books. The problem with this is that my expectations are high and this book just didn’t live up to them. It wasn’t a bad book by any means. I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

I did really love Nina. She was very unapologetic in using the people and things she needed to. She had a purpose and she would stop at nothing to reach it. I loved this about her. You could see her growth through out the book. She didn’t miraculously turn into a good human but you could see her humanity growing. She was a very complex character. I think the author did an amazing job with her. She was real and had many flaws but you still love her.

This book is dark and gritty. There is no apology in how truly awful this world is and how awful the people who live there are. There seems to be no hope and yet our characters find something to fight for!

Thank you so much for an early copy of this book.

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas

4 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I am going to attempt to write a review for this monster of a book. So much happens here that it’d be hard to write a review without spoiling so this will probably be short and sweet.

I want to start off by saying Sarah J Maas can write a fantasy world like it’s her job.. I mean I know it’s her job but she is absolutely perfect at it. This world is so in depth and I felt like I was in Crescent City. She is also insanely good at writing characters. I could feel every emotion Bryce went through. I honestly could. The storytelling is all so good that I feel like I am apart of it.

Now that being said.. I was bored for the first 3rd of this book. It took me weeks to read because I kept putting it down. After the first bit though, I literally could not stop reading. So if you are having the same problem you should push through it. I promise you will not regret it.

Nothing Compares to the Duke by Christy Carlyle

5 out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I loved this book!

Arabella and Rhys were childhood friends. They did everything together. Until her 18th birthday. Arabella realized that she saw Rhys as more than just a friend and Rhys broke her heart. We jump forward 5 years. Rhys is is a scoundrel of the worst kind. He throws wicked parties and dallies with way too many woman. His father dies and he is now the duke and has too many responsibilies.

Arabella has turned down 5 proposals. She has plans of her own and none of them include getting married. Her family wants her to get married. So to advoid this she inlists Rhys help. They will pretend to get engaged to get her family to back off and she will help Rhys with his ledgers and his sisters first season.

I loved seeing these two grow back together after 5 years of not talking. Arabella was such a strong female lead. She wanted her Independence and Rhys soon realized that he was a cad and that he wants her.

I have loved each book in this series. Christy Carlyle has a way of writing very flawed characters but making you love them even more for it. I highly recommend this book and this series in general.

I enjoyed this book so much!

Sydney and Scott have been rivals from the moment they first met in middle school. They grew up constantly fighting and trying to be better than the other. They both got into an amazing college and they were ready to move on and get a fresh start.. That is until Scott was the football player giving Sydney her award and they realized they went to the same college.

I loved Scott and Sydney. I think that they were very relatable. My husband and I started out as video game rivals. So I understood a lot of their banter. It was extremely entertaining to watch them try and navigate being friends instead of enemies. Neither one knew how to act around the other.

This was a sweet, clean sports romance. If that is something you enjoy than I highly recommend this book. There is also a short novella that you can read that will give you more of their rivalry while growing up!

Thank you to the author for an early copy of this book.

Undercover Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams

4 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Undercover Bromance is the second book in this series and I enjoyed it! ⁣

I loved Liv and Mack. It’s an enemies to lovers romance… Liv didn’t like Mack from the very beginning, you know because he ate her left over Chinese food! Honestly girl, I get it. not even my husband touches my food. Liv gets fired from her restaurant job because she catches her boss harnessing a female employee. She enlists the help from Mack to expose her boss.⁣

It’s cute and funny. Some parts were extra cheesy but not enough to take away from the story. I read it in one sitting, staying up way too late but I couldn’t put it down! Highly recommend if you are in need of a light, happy book!⁣

Bone Crier’s Moon by Kathryn Purdie

4 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I can not tell you how many times I put this book down. I did not like anything about it at first. I didn’t care about the characters and the story was confusing. But I am so unbelievably glad I stuck it out because it got freaking amazing!

It turns out that I really liked the characters.. I just do not like the romance. I do not feel a connection between Ailesse and Bastien at all. I think that is what was bothering me so much at the beginning. But if we take out the romance then the story itself is really fantastic. We have a group of women whose job is to ferry souls of the dead. They have magic by wearing the bones of the animals they killed, called graces. The magic they gained was specific to whatever animal they wore. They also had a rite of passage that involved killing their soulmates.. Pretty gruesome but Ailesse has been preparing for this rite her whole life.

Bastien witnessed his father being killed by a bone ferrier when he was young. His goal in life is to get revenge on these woman. He finds the perfect opportunity when he sees Aileese preforming the ritual on the bridge.. and everything kind of snow balls from there.

We have a third character, Sabine. I really liked Sabine. In fact, I think she was my favorite character out of all of them. She did not want to kill anyone or anything. I loved how deep her friendship with Ailesse was. They loved each other unconditionally even though they were completely different. When Bastien takes Aileese, Sabine will stop at nothing to save her.

So this book started out pretty slow but it became extremely interesting once I got over the “romance” and I got a handle on the magic and the world. I am very sad that I now have to wait for the next book.

Fantasy

Dark Skies by Danielle Jensen

5 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This is the second book in the Dark Shores series and I loved every page. I liked the first book but this one is by far my favorite. You can technically read this book first. Both books are told during the same timeline.⁣

This story is about Teriana’s best friend, Lydia and a new character Killian. Both characters are on the run. One from an attempted assassination and the other is a disgraced commander. I loved watching these two interact. It’s a very slow burn romance but that fits the book, so I can’t complain.⁣

This story centers a lot on politics. There are so many betrayals and a whole lot of scheming. It added so much tension between all the characters and it had me sitting on the edge of my seat and completely unable to put this book down.

If you’ve never read one of Jensen’s stories then you are in for a treat. This world is so dynamic and the characters are all beautifully real. I highly recommend if you love an epic fantasy!⁣

Thank you Netgalley and Tor Teen for the early e-book!

Gone With the Rogue by Amelia Grey

3.5 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Gone With the Rogue is the second book in the First Comes Love series by Amelia Grey. But it can also read as a stand alone if you haven’t already read the first book.

Julia is a widow with a 4 year old son. Her father in law(the duke) controls every aspect of her life, down to what a proper widow should wear. All Julia wants is a little bit of freedom and to be in charge of her own sons upbringing. Garret is the owner of a shipping company and he is ready to settle down. He is tired of living the life of a roguish sailor.

I liked this book for the most part. I really enjoyed the beginning of the story. Julia meets Garret while stuck in a tree. Their meeting was really sweet and made me fall for Garret. He is drawn to her right away and knows he wants her to be apart of his life. I liked that he didn’t fight his feelings. Julia kind of annoyed me. She wanted her freedom to make her own choices but still was very focused on what society would think. I still liked her but she was very inconsistent.

The real problem I had with the book was that it become solely focused on the duke. Julia constantly worried about where he was or what would happen if she got caught. I know that the plot of the book was to expose the duke for someone he wasn’t but I think it was too focused on him instead of the growing relationship with the two characters. I just didn’t care about the Duke plot. I wanted more with the relationship.

Overall I say this is a solid historical romance. It was an enjoyable read. I say if you like a rogue who is actually isn’t very rogue like and a woman who just wants what is best for her and her son, then give this one a try!

Thank you St Martins Press and Netgalley for the early copy of this book.

So vampires are coming back in the book community and I am honestly not mad about that. I love vampires and this is the 3rd vampire book I have read in the last month.

I enjoyed this book for the most part. Grace’s parents die so she moves to a boarding school where her uncle is the head minister and her cousin attends. When she gets there everyone is eyeing her and acting like they all have a secret.. Well they all do. It’s a school for paranormal people! I have a little bit of an issue here. Why did her uncle think it was a good idea to bring a human girl into a school for paranormals? I do not understand his logic there. But anyways.. Grace is drawn to dark, mysterious Jaxon. He tries to push her away, saying he is dangerous to be around. And here is my other issue.. the beginning of this book was Twilight.. Don’t get me wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed Twilight. It started my love of paranormal. But this book was entirely too close to that story. I really started to enjoy the book more towards the end. There were a few things I didn’t see coming!

This book was good! I enjoyed listening to the story. I liked the characters. It did read a tad juvenile but I am also 30.. so take that how you like. Am I going to read the next book? 100% yes. Do I think that you need to run out and buy this book? nah… unless you want to reread Twilight with a little bit of a twist.

This is the 6th book in the series, so if you have made it this far then you don’t need me talking you into reading this book or the next.  But just in case you do.. READ IT! If you haven’t started this series..DO IT!

I can not say enough good things about this series or really any of Annette Marie’s books.  I think she is completely underrated as an author and more people should be talking about her books.  Her skills with storytelling are unreal and she has written some of my favorite characters to date.

In this book Tori has alot going on right from the beginning.  And.. well dang I can’t even talk about it with out giving away spoilers.  That’s the problem with writing a review for the 6th book in a series.  But this book is filled with so many ups and downs.  We get to see the Ghost again and I freaking love the Ghost.

Many, many secrets were revealed.  Lives were lost and some saved. So many emotions ranging from happiness to heartbreak.  Loyalties were tested and betrayals I didn’t see coming happened.

This book was intense and I wouldn’t change a single word.  July 10th can not come fast enough!

Historical Romance

The Unsuitable Duke by Suzanna Medeiros

3 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I think this book had a lot of potential but unfortunately the story fell short for me. Charles the Duke of Castlefield has decided that he intends to marry Ellen, the girl who was his best friend when they were little but he pushed he away as they grew up. Ellen was married to a terrible guy.. luckily he died. So Charles decides he’s finally going to make his move.

I know that was a jumble of an explanation but that’s the gist of the story. That’s all good. I like when childhood friends get together. I just didn’t feel any connection with the characters. Zero. Zip. Nothing. And not just with Charles and Ellen but Ellen and Charles’ sister.. or even Charles and his sister.. There wasn’t enough backstory to feel the connection. You can’t just say that 2 people were friends and that’s it. It doesn’t feel real.

Anyways… I think the book could have been better. It wasn’t terrible but it just wasn’t great.

This book is part of the Midnight Coven Universe. It is a novella and can be read as a stand alone. I enjoyed this book. I will be honest and tell you that I have read only one other book in this universe. But you really don’t have to read them all. I don’t feel like I missed out on anything. This book is absolutely a stand alone. It took me a little bit to get into because the storyline skipped from present to 3-5 years ago and that was a little bit hard to follow until I got the hang of it. Hayden is a tortured knight who is ordered to kill Katherine.. only he can’t kill her. Hayden fights to keep her safe and they grow close and fall in love. There is so much more to this story. I had a hard time with the timeline jumping around but it honestly gave us back story and made a short novella seem longer and filled with more story. If you love hot vampire romances, I highly recommend this book.

The Foolish Friend: A Regency Romps Novella by Elizabeth Bramwell

4 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I am really enjoying this series. Lady Henrietta has been in love with Lord James since she was a little girl. James has never really paid her any attention. He goes away for a year and comes back and Henrietta realizes that James isn’t ever going to look at her as anything other than a friend. So she decides to be herself and not try to be what she thinks James wants anymore. And she ends up having a lot of fun and alot of suitors. So that’s obviously when James starts noticing her as more.

This book was extremely sweet. It’s about two friends and I liked that. I liked that Henry was herself and I like that she enjoyed being herself.

I am looking forward to the next book!

Scot Under the Covers by Suzanne Enoch

4 out of 5 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I enjoyed this book. I didn’t enjoy it was much as the first but I think that’s because I listened to the audiobook for the first book and the accent is so much better when you hear it vs when you read it. But the storyline was good! I liked the two main characters. Aden is the middle son and he was kind of a goofball and I liked that. He seemed to take nothing seriously except getting Miranda free and I loved that. Miranda bothered me at first. She was so rude to Aden when he had done nothing to her, just because she doesn’t like gambling and Aden was known to gamble. It bothered me but she does calm down and I loved her sass and how she never let Aden get away with anything.

All in all it’s a fantastic book. Suzanne Enoch is a go to author for me and this book just added to the reasons I love her writing. She writes characters with flaws that you love anyways and the banter is always, always humorous. I love it!

Paranormal Romance

Lady and the Wolf by Hendrix

4 out 5 Stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

So I really enjoyed this book. It’s about a human girl who goes through something tragic and is saved by Van, who is a wolf but she doesn’t know that. Aira ends up living with a wolf family and again she has no idea. She can’t remember what happened to her real family. She kind of developed a semi relationship with Van. There is literally zero romance until the very end when they kiss once.

The only real issue I had about this book was the “relationship” and I put that in quotes because there wasn’t a relationship… it was all hero worship. She hero worships the guy that saved her.. They barely talk. He does do some sweet things for her but it’s still not what I would call a romantic relationship. It’s honestly more uncle/niece… which is creepy because they are mates.

So I would not label this book as a romance and that’s 100% fine. They develop a friendship that I think is more beautiful than a romantic one. She is still very young and he is much older. They both needed a friend and that’s what they became and I liked that.

I listened to the audiobook for this and I think the narration was very good!

The Blacksmith Queen by G.A. Aiken

5 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I am so excited that I was able to get my hands on this book early. Everything G.A. Aiken/Shelly Laurenston writes is pure gold. I have read the Dragon Kin series so many times and each time I love the re-read more than the last.. and this book is no exception.

The Blaksmith Queen has everything you could possible want in a fantasy book. There are centaurs, dwarfs, wood elf, barbarians, a chained lava dragon, war monks, a drunk warrior cousin, a pretend fated queen, a mad cow with no soul hell bent on taking over the world? Yeah this book has all that and more. Oh let’s not forget that this book will literally have you laughing out loud. I read this book during my lunch break at work and I would just laugh and laugh and everyone else would stare but I don’t care! It is honestly just that funny. And you don’t see the humor coming. It’s one of the things I love most about it.

If you haven’t read the Dragon Kin series.. one you are nuts, two: you have a month before this book comes out. I highly recommend that you read that series before this one. It is absolutely 100% not necessary but they do mention the Dark Plains a few times but I just think that series will give you a little bit of a start when you read this one. Plus we now have to wait for the second book in this series, you can re-read the Dragon Kin series and trust me you will want to.

I can not recommend this book enough. The characters are all fantastic. The storyline is fantastic. The world is fantastic. Yeah… everything is fantastic. The only problem is now I have to wait for the next one!

I received a copy of this book from Kensington Books/Netgalley

Curious Minds by Janet Evanovich

4.5 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Not a bad way to start the new year! Although I technically started this in 2018 but finished it in 2019! I love Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum books. I just did a re-read and I thought I would try out some of her other series and I was not disappointed at all! Although I didn’t like this one quite as much as I like Stephanie Plum but still so enjoyable. Emerson Knight kind of makes up for anything wrong with this. I loved his character so much. He was so awkward and adorable. I loved it! The only downside here is Riley. There is honestly nothing wrong with her. She is a fine character but she also was just fine . There’s nothing special about her. I liked her attitude and I liked her humor.

I can’t wait to see what Emerson gets into next!

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

Rating: 2 out of 5.

I have many thoughts about this book and honestly not a lot of them are great. So I couldn’t decide if I was going to even write a review because I just didn’t like this book. But here we are.

First off Nick.. He is one of the worst boyfriends ever. He has been with Rachel for two freaking years. They haven’t spoken about marriage.. which I guess I get they are both focused on their careers.. but it’s still a bit weird. He didn’t tell his family about Rachel.. they have been together for TWO years! And he has said nothing!? His family is a bit crazy but come on. Thats not ok. He brings Rachel to meet his family without giving her a single word about them. She is completely blindsided by how rich and how much money means to their family. Oh and lets not forget that he forgot to mention that he has slept with a couple of the girls there. She gets blindsided by that as well. Not cool Nick. Not cool at all.

So all of this and it kind of makes me think less of Rachel. She’s been coasting along with this guy for a couple years and she doesn’t feel comfortable asking about his family? And she doesn’t really care when she found out his family knows nothing about it? Eh. Oh and I hate that she just kind of went along with everything talking crap about her. I just didn’t like her.

To be honest, I didn’t like any of the characters. Well maybe Rachel’s friend. I can’t remember her name but I liked her. I also didn’t really feel connected with any of the characters. I think because the POV changed so often and with so many people. I didn’t really get a feel for any of them.

I read this book because I want to see the movie and I always read the book first. But I honestly don’t think I will pick up the next book in this series.

I put off reading this book because it got so much hype. Yes I realize that makes no sense but I tend not to like books that are this outrageously hyped up. And let’s be real y’all. This book came out in 2015 and it is still talked about. So it has just been quietly sitting in my audible waiting on me. And well today I wasn’t in the mood for romance, so I started it.. and I literally did not stop until the book was finished. I had no idea I would be so into a heist book.. but apparently I am!

So yeah my point is that I am an idiot for not listening to this sooner and that this book was fantastic and I want to have Kaz’s babies. —That’s the most important thing.

Royals by Rachel Hawkins

4 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I honestly had no idea what this book was about when I bought it. It was 100% a cover buy. I mean I assumed it had something to do with royals because I am super smart but other than that I didn’t have a clue. I am also not a huge fan of princess type books. So I have been putting off reading this for a long time but I regret that choice because I loved this! I love that Daisy wasn’t the princess. I loved her wit and sarcasm. I honestly loved everything about Daisy. She was a fantastic character. Miles who is the love interest was also pretty awesome. I will say that going into it I was afraid that they were somehow going to pair Daisy with Seb and I wanted to stop reading but I knew as soon as we met Miles that he was are man. (again going into this book completely blind. It threw me a few curveballs.) I actually recommend going into to this book blind.. even though if you are reading this then I have already given away things sooo my recommendation means nothing. Sigh

The only thing I didn’t really like was the ending. I mean the ending was good but it was so short. It wrapped up way too quickly and we really don’t know any of Miles and Daisy’s plans. We also didn’t really get to see them as a “real” couple. It all felt rushed. But still good!

Pestilence by Laura Thalassa

5 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 5 out of 5.

“That’s beside the point, brain. Don’t be an idiot on me now.”

“After I put Pestilence’s crown on my head (motherfucking queen right here) “

I read this whole effing book in one sitting.. in ONE sitting. I understand that people do that all the time and whatever I have too but never with a book that is almost 400 pages and I also had to bribe my husband into watching our daughter while I sat in bed and read for hours. I didn’t make dinner and I didn’t go to target (kind of a big freaking deal). My eyes hurt so bad but it was all so worth it.

I will admit that I was doubting the author’s sanity for the first 30ish% of the book. You know with all the suffering and killing. I was doubting she could make me love Pestilence. But she did and I fell HARD. He was delightful. Yup I said delightful. He was adorable in his awkward ‘courting’ and you know sexy stuff. It was al just fantastic. Sara was pretty cool too. Her inner dialogue was hilarious.

She would be suffering and then all of a sudden she would think something and I would be laughing.. and then I would feel bad for laughing. But Sara took everything Pestilence dished out and gave just a good back to him.

I can not freaking wait for WAR!!! AHH.

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

4 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This book was good. Do I think it is way over hyped? Absolutely. I feel like when a book is talked about as much as this one is, it sets the bar at an impossible level. I have started this book 3 different times and I had a hard time getting into it. I was just expecting more I guess. BUT it was a great book. The world building was superb. Seriously some of the best I have ever read. Once I got about halfway into the book I felt like I was in the book but I was a tad bored until then. I also think that some of the characters switched sides too much… Not sides exactly. But I guess the way they felt about magic. It’s good, bad, too powerful, destroy it, spread it around.. There was just a lot of flip flopping and the Prince was the worse one with the flip flopping.

Don’t get me wrong. It was a fantastic book and I am looking forward to the next one.. although I will probably forget it by next year.. But it just wasn’t all everyone said it was.

The Thief by J.R. Ward

3 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I both liked and hated this book. I am extremely happy that Jane and V figured out their shit.. even though they have done that before and fell back into disaster so lets hope it sticks this time. But I generally love them as a couple and as separate people. So I am happy that they are happy. And I am happy that we kind of see a “sweeter” side to V. Sweeter isn’t the right word. But I can’t think of what exactly I mean. He becomes more open in this book. So yay.

Now for Sola and Assail.. I just did not like them. Assail.. well I guess I kind of liked him. He was sweet and never failed in his love for Sola. I mean he lied and hid things but he was always up front with his feelings so thats good. Sola.. oh Sola. I loved her before this book. She was strong and her own person. In this book she was a bitch. I hated that she refused to go back to see a dying Assail. She got better int he middle. But then when she found out about vampires.. I wanted to kill her. She was terrible. So yeah I just wasn’t a fan of them here. I hope in a book later on will help me like them better.

Besides the characters.. the story was good. The new evil is interesting… a little creepy with Throe basically fucking a book but to each their own. I hated how this book ended. There are so so many questions. I feel like nothing was resolved. Hell even Sola and Assail’s relationship isn’t perfectly resolved. At least not in my eyes. They are together but I just feel like the end was so rushed. After I finished I didn’t feel satisfied with the ending. I will say that I am SO offing excited for Murhder!!!

The Wright Love by K.A. Linde

4 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I am so excited that I got to read this book. Sutton is such a strong woman. I am utterly amazed by her. I love how she slowly took control of her life and her happiness. David was also an amazing character. He was so sweet and he took everything at Sutton’s pace. I am in love with him. I think they are perfect and I am loving how their relationship is coming together.

Now I will be honest.. I have only read one of the other stories about the Wright family.. which you do not have to read the others to enjoy this one.. BUT it makes me want to read all the others.(seriously I just bought all the other ones) I am completely obsessed with the Wright family. They are so supportive and loving of each other. I need to know each and every one of their stories.

This book will make you cry.. I mean I cried a lot.. and that ending!! Major cliff hanger but Linde told us that ahead of time and the second book comes out at the end of the month so there isn’t a long wait.. yeah not long.. Im not crying for the second book right now.. not at all.

ARC was given to me by the author.

A Taste for a Mate by Carrie Ann Ryan

2 out of 5 stars

Rating: 2 out of 5.

I had a lot of issues with this book but honestly it was a lot better than I thought it would be. So that’s something. Willow was a terribly weak character. She gets kidnapped, collared and beaten because Jasper’s scent was in her bakery. She doesn’t care. She finds out werewolves are real.. again she doesn’t care. Jasper bites her and makes her come in front of the enemies and his family.. she’s embarrassed but says nothing about it. Jasper made her his mate without asking.. she doesn’t care. She has to close up her bakery.. doesn’t care. Do you see a pattern? She just takes whatever is thrown at her with out so much as a word. Like literally she doesn’t say anything about any of it! OH and the worse thing she does happens towards the end. They get back to their home from finding a dead body in the woods. They get into a fight and she runs back out in the woods. TSTL! I can’t.. I really just can’t handle her.

I liked the Redwood pack though. To be honest I don’t remember reading the first book… But I rated it with 1 star. the only reason I picked this one up was because it was free.. and I will read the next one (it’s also free) because I enjoyed the pack and I kind of want to see how the next one plays out. I know it’s MMF.. so Im interested.

My Commander by Alanea Alder

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I freaking loved this book. It was utterly ridiculous and I laughed so so hard. There was a part where Meryn starts her cycle and Aiden knew nothing about it. He gets his freaking ALPHA team together to get tampons like it was a damn mission. They were all so serious about it. I honestly laughed for a solid 5 minutes. I had to play it for my co workers and they laughed for 5 minutes. Seriously. I am laughing right now just thinking about it.

If you don’t like that kind of over the top silly humor then this is not the book for you. If you need a good laugh and don’t care that it’s silly then pick this shit up. Because it was hilarious.

Highland Protector by Hannah Howell

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This is the 17th book in the Murray Family by Hannah Howell. And I was excited for this one but it didn’t quite meet my expectations. I started with the Murray family in July of last year.. So I have read 17 books about this family in less than a year… and for the most part I have enjoyed them. But at some point they have all kind of become the same story. And the thing is that’s not an absolute terrible thing. The story is freaking good! But they all kind of blur together sometimes.

It could also have something to do with the fact that I have been reading aloooooot of highlander books in the last couple months and to be frank most highlander stories are very similar. But I love me some highlander men! SO I will forever read them and I will read about the Murray family until there are no more Murrays to read about.

Paranormal Romance

Hot and Badgered by Shelly Laurenston

5 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I LOVE this shifter world. I love it so freaking much. It is without a doubt my favorite PNR shifter world. This book is based in the same world that her Pride series is in. But with different people. Specifically honey badgers. YAY. If you read the Pride series then you know Liv.. and Liv was freaking hilarious. So I was so excited to start this series. And it did NOT disappoint.

Charlie is half honey badger and half wolf. She is kind of the mother hen of her two sisters. I kind of feel like you should go into this book not knowing anything specific about the sisters so I won’t tell you about them but I will say that I loved them. Berg is a grizzly and omg have I said how much I love the bears in these books?! I could go on and on but I won’t. I loved every single character in the book. I loved that we got little glimpses with some of the shifters from the Pride series. I loved how absolutely crazy and funny this book is.

I think I said loved 302 times but I don’t care. It was fantastic and I am so excited for the next one!

Restore Me by Tahereh Mafi

5 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This is the 4th book in the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi. This was suppose to be a trilogy but the author decided to give us three more book and I am absolutely thrilled. I love the original trillogy.

I have so so many words and I have no idea who to put them so that they make any sense. I will say that I am completely shocked. This isn’t at all how I thought this book was going to go but I loved it! There were a few moments where I thought Juliette went a little bit crazy and I was worried for her but eh she had reasons. And Warner. oh God Warner. He will forever be one of my favorite book boyfriends. I am SOOO freaking glad we got his POV in this book. I read the original trilogy in the last couple of days and I would have LOVED to have his POV in those. So I am excited that we get his thoughts.

I am kind of broken with how the book left off. I mean we find out some crazy shit about Juliette and the others.. yeah the others.. I am heart broken. I hate that I have to wait for the next book to come out. And I am nervous about where Mafi is taking us on this crazy adventure… nervous and excited. Sigh.. now I will just go sit and think about how much I love Warner. Bye.

Hello Stranger by Lisa Kleypas

3 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This is the 4th book in The Ravenels series by Lisa Klepas and I did not like this book at first. It got better but I almost put it down. I hated that our MC was named Garrett. It’s such a small thing but as I listened to the audiobook I had to keep reminding myself that Garrett was a girl and that annoyed me. I also really didn’t like Garrett. She goes on and on about how she is independent and how she doesn’t need a man to make her whole but then a chapter later she is talking about marrying a man who hasn’t mention anything about marriage. In fact he tells her that she will never see him again. And she’s sitting in her room thinking about marriage. I just didn’t like her character.

Ethan well.. I honestly don’t have many thoughts on him. I will give him props for never lying to Garrett. He straight up told her his life was in peril and she wouldn’t see him again.. even if that ended up being a lie.. it was the truth when he said it.

The story itself was fine. yeahhhh that’s all I have. It was fine. Nothing spectacular but it was good and it entertained me.

I want West’s story. OMG I want it now. I am head over heels in love with that man. I am so excited to get his story!

Love and Other Scandals by Caroline Linden

5 out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This is the first awesome book I have read in awhile. I LOVED the characters. Joan was me. She was so relatable. She had her flaws but she learned accept them instead of whining about them. She was funny, smart and bold. She was juts all around fantastic. And lord have mercy, Tristan. He is my new favorite HR hero. I am beyond in love with him. I loved how they formed a relationship. It wasn’t just out of the blue. It was a kind of hate to friends to love. I loved it!

I have kind of been in a weird reading slump. I have the romance package through audible so I have been trying out all kinds of new authors and a lot of them just don’t work for me. I haven’t ever read anything by this author but I will be reading more soon! I loved how she wrote her characters and this story!

So I Married a Sorcerer by Kerrelyn Sparks

4 out of 5 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

So it was good.. I don’t know though.. it just wasn’t great. It felt extremely long to me. I honestly think I would have liked it a whole lot more if I would have listened to the audiobook. The story was almost too happy and perfect. That makes no sense. Brigitta is this sweet, caring, beautiful girl whose family happened to be a bunch of dicks. Of course she had no clue what they did because she was sent away. But a bunch of crap happens and she finds out that she’s a princess and then she is kidnapped by the scariest pirate in the seas… who just happens to also be kind of a sweetheart oh and he’s seeking revenge for what Brigitta’s family did to his. Yes, it gets confusing. I honestly don’t really know what he originally planned to do with her.. he wanted to take her to her asshole brother for ransom? But I don’t really understand why. But whatever. They obviously fall in love because they are both just so dang sweet and then there’s a competition for Brigitta when she gets back home.

Honestly I am too lazy to give a real review right now.. and this all makes sense in my head but it’s just not coming together on paper. So yeah I’m done. It was a good book! Just way too freaking long!

Waking Gods by Sylvain Neuvel

4 out of 5 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is the second book in the Themis Files by Sylvain Neuvel. I loved this book. I didn’t like it quite as much as I liked the first book but it was still a fantastic read. The first book was exciting. They found this alien robot and were trying to figure out how to make it work. In this book the aliens were invading Earth and the mood of the book was more scary. It was all about the robots attacking Earth and killing millions and millions of people. Don’t get me wrong.. I still enjoyed the hell out of it. I just wasn’t as excited once I realized that people kept dying.

I love how the story is told through audio logs and interviews. It’s such a cool and different way to tell a story.

I am super excited for the next book!

Fantasy

Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel

4.5 out of 5 Stars

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

I liked this so much more than I thought I would. I borrowed the audiobook from my library and it needed to be returned tomorrow so I kind of just jumped into it with out knowing too much about it. And when I realized that it was told in interviews and journal logs I was extremely skeptical. But after awhile I was so engrossed in what was happening that I barely noticed it. I actually really loved how the story was told. I am 100% completely in love with it actually.

And the story itself is something that I have never read before.. anything involving the military and the US government is something I usually would not reach for… But again once I got a little bit into the story I hardly noticed. I was just so freaking into the characters and so into what they were doing. The one thing that did bother me was Kara.. I liked her until she weirdly started dating a co worker and then randomly started sleeping with another.. I just didn’t understand why that needed to be added. And trust me when I say that I only read romance books so me saying that I wish that they didn’t ass the stupid romance is saying something. It just made me hate her. I don’t get what was wrong with Ryan.. I don’t get why she randomly jumped ship to another guy. It was weird and awkward and I just hated it. It’s the only reason I took off the half a star.

This is by far the best book I’ve read so far this year. I am super excited for the next book.. I have the audiobook on hold now! Oh BTW the narrators were phenomenal. The audio book was like listening to a movie.

Baby, I’m Howling for You by Christine Warren

4 out of 5 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I love Christine Warren’s stories. I love her characters and I love her shifter world. Her “The Others” series is one of my all time favorite paranormal series. So when I saw that she was starting a shifter series, I basically jumped up and down.

This book was set in Alphaville. Which is a town full of all kinds of shifters. They are mostly shifters who are running away from their pack or family or just straight up outcasts. They have formed this town and are a pack among themselves. I personally have not read a book with this.. I have no idea if it’s out there or not but how freaking cool is that? I am so so excited for the rest of this series.

Anyways… Renny is our main girl here. She is running away from an insane stalker. She has been running for months. When she ran to human towns, her stalker riled up the human activist and she got pushed from the town. And she wasn’t able to stay long enough in a pack for them to trust her. So she runs to Alphaville as a last ditch effort to start a new life. Thats where she meets Mick. She literally runs right to his house. He had a mate that died 8 years before.. I was honestly a little worried about that. But the way Warren wrote it was kind of perfect. Renny wasn’t jealous of his ex mate and mick didn’t let it keep him away from Renny.. for that long.

I loved this book. I am excited for the next one!
