The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Unpopular opinion but I don’t get it.. I really do not understand why this book is getting so much hype. It has been recommended to my so many times and I’m gonna be honest with y’all. I did not enjoy it and I don’t understand what is so fantastic about it.

I get that Monty was suppose to be funny.. and at times he was. But 98% of the time he annoyed the hell out of me. He was quite frankly a douchebag. He is completely in love with his best friend but instead of being a man and telling his friend, he decides it’s best if he sleeps with tons of other guys and girls and then go and tell the man he’s in love with all about his conquests. No. He is a jerk to his sister because she reads. He is selfish and ungrateful and kind of a whore. Percy(which is the best friend he is in love with) is kind of an idiot for sticking around with Monty.. I don’t see the appeal. Monty got everyone in these crazy situations because he is only concerned about himself. He never thinks of anyone else.

I am honestly trying to understand why everyone loved this so much but the whole book I wanted to punch Monty right in his face. I understand that he grows up.. a little bit.. by the end of the book. But honestly it wasn’t that big of a change.

I am giving this book 2 stars because it was funny at times.. But I really didn’t like the story and I really hated Monty. To each their own.

I am not sure how to rate this book.. I knew going into the book that the MC was going to be a douchebag.. I mean helllooo it’s in the flipping title. So I knew he was going to be a dick but my issue is with Jameson. No she didn’t sleep with the guy which yay her but she let him talk to her like she was a plaything. She thought it was funny and I just don’t understand that. If anyone ever said the things he said to her to me I would punch him in the face.. or lower areas. When I read a book I automatically put myself in the MCs place and I was so freaking frustrated by this whole book because of that.

The writing itself wasn’t terrible. I mean the things Oz says are immature at times but hey he’s a douchebag so whatever. The story.. well I mean it isn’t an original story by any means.

The one thing I truly did love about this book was Oz after he was in a relationship. He was amazing and didn’t put up with his friends shit. So that was his redeeming factor. So I am torn on how to rate it… eeepp.. IDK! I guess 3 stars.. but thats me being overly generous.

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

Ok. So this book was one hell of a surprise. I am the type of girl/reader that needs a romance in the story. Even in fantasy books, I need to have a romance and quite honestly I usually need the romance to be a huge element of the book. But a friend of mine said she couldn’t be my friend anymore if I didn’t read this book.. so I picked it up and I freaking loved it. Solid 4.5 read.

I’ll admit that the beginning of the book was a bit slow and I wanted to put it down but that’s really just because I had such a negative attitude going into it. So I’m not actually sure if the book was slow or if it was just because I went into it with the wrong attitude… But it picked up pretty early on. I am so intrigued by Kell and his magic and the whole world itself. And I do like lilah now. I didn’t like her at first but she defiantly grew on me.

I have the 2nd and 3rd books on hold at my library and I can’t freaking wait to see what happens next.
